The ASEAN University Network (AUN) Secretariat, in collaboration with the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS), announces the Fellowship for Research in Japan (Short-term (PA)) 2027/2028, offering opportunities for early-career researchers and doctoral candidates from ASEAN Member States to conduct research in Japan.

The fellowship aims to support researchers in advancing their academic careers, strengthening collaboration with leading research groups in Japan, and expanding international research networks.

Research Fields

The fellowship is open to all fields of research and scientific disciplines.

Key Dates

• Fellowship period: 1–12 months, commencing between July 1, 2027, and March 31, 2028
• Application deadline: November 16, 2026
• Expected announcement of results: April 2027

Eligibility

The program is open to applicants from ASEAN Member States who:

• Hold a Ph.D. or are doctoral candidates expected to obtain a Ph.D. within two years from the time of application.
• Have identified and contacted an eligible prospective host researcher at a university or research institution in Japan before applying.
• Submit all application documents in English.

Financial Support

Successful applicants will receive financial support in accordance with JSPS regulations, including:

• Monthly allowance
• Round-trip airfare
• Overseas travel insurance
• Other applicable benefits under JSPS regulations

Through this fellowship, participants will have the opportunity to conduct research in Japan, engage with international academic communities, and strengthen research collaboration between ASEAN and Japan.
